The changing demographics in America are a reality that affects every aspect of life. On the one hand, so-called millennials now represent a major segment of the population. At the other end of the spectrum, we have the aging “Baby Boomers” retiring at record rates.

In case you haven’t noticed, the popular media is on a crusade to divide us over many issues – and gun control is at the top of the list. If you are considering the purchase of your first handgun, and possibly applying for a concealed pistol license, the chances are pretty good that people close to you will find out; and some of them may feel entitled to express their strong opposition. How will you respond? After the 2016 election, and the unprecedented social dysfunction that followed, this question is worth serious consideration.
Our recommendation is to steer the discussion away from politics. Instead, rely upon statistics and numbers from reliable sources like the FBI and the ATF, which clearly show violent crime has steadily declined over the last few decades, while legal firearm sales have risen dramatically. The fact is, good guys with guns deter bad guys with guns.
Next, consider asking your anti-gun friends and family if they agree that it’s important to equip our homes, offices, and public spaces with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Of course they will agree, and you can point out that current police and first responder statistics reveal the average person is 45 times more likely to be victimized by violent crime than by fire.
No matter how hard you try to remain apolitical, some will go there anyway. Remind these folks that the 2nd Amendment does not discriminate. It protects all Americans equally, whether they be Republican or Democrat, male or female, straight or gay. The Founding Fathers knew corruption and violence can come from either end of the political spectrum. They not only wanted to allow law-abiding citizens to protect themselves from crime in their villages and neighborhoods, but from tyranny imposed by an oppressive government as well. In this way, the 2nd Amendment is an integral part of our important system of checks and balances.
However, perhaps the best way to expose the hollow claims of the anti-gun movement is to offer an up-close-and-personal look at responsible firearm owners in action. Temporarily suspend the debate and invite your opponents to join you on our next trip to the range. Don’t pressure them to participate, but bring your .22 pistol or rifle just in case they show interest. Be prepared to offer instruction on safe gun handling and range etiquette/rules. You may not only win the war of words, but find a new shooting partner as well!
I had the opportunity to speak about women’s personal protection and self-defense at a Bama Carry meeting not too long ago, and I was able to take some questions toward the end of the presentation. One of those questions really hit home for me. It was powerful. It was poignant.
