Have you bought a new handgun, or are you considering your first purchase? Before you shoot it, learn the basics — handling, operation, safety, and your responsibility under the law. We offer the only basic handgun courses in Kalamazoo County that are developed by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA).
Our Handgun Safety offerings should be considered prerequisites for inexperienced shooters who are interested in obtaining a CPL. See our Fees page for pricing. To sign up for a class, send us a message or call us.
USCCA Basic Handgun Course – Non-Shooting
This 2.5 hour class introduces the major types of handguns, describes how they operate, and highlights the pros and cons of each type. We also cover important, related topics like the four rules of firearms safety, shooting range etiquette, secure storage, proper grip, loading, and preventive maintenance and cleaning. This class includes a copy of the USCCA’s Concealed Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals text book.
Important: The USCCA Basic Handgun Course does not include any live-fire exercises. Most demonstrations are performed with weighted “blue gun” pistols. These training aids look and feel like actual handguns, but they are plastic replicas. Loading and cleaning demonstrations utilize actual pistols with inert, plastic training bullets. Safety is our top priority. No loaded weapons or live ammunition is brought into your home for this class.
The USCCA Basic Handgun Course is serves as a prerequisite to our live-fire, Shooting Fundamentals class.
USCCA Home Defense Fundamentals – Non-Shooting
This offering is similar USCCA Basic Handgun Course, but places a bit more emphasis upon personal protection plans and home security. It is a 2.5 hour class, which serves as a prerequisite for our Handgun Basics II (shooting) class. If you are purchasing a handgun, shotgun, or rifle specifically for home defense, this course may be your best option.
Being a USCCA branded class, it includes a copy of Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals. Again, this is a non-shooting class, so no weapons or live ammunition is brought into your home.
